President & CEO

Dr. Fred S. Ferguson DDS

Dr. Ferguson is president and CEO of About Smiles, Inc. and creator of MySmileGuide.com. Since starting About Smiles Inc in 1999, Dr Ferguson has consulted with insurance companies and organizations with goal to increase their recognition of the value of oral health to overall health promotion and reduction of costs and claims. He has a long history of providing continuing education for insurance companies to their medical and dental health provider groups. Dr Ferguson has developed oral health education materials (presented on AboutSmiles.com) for individuals, caregivers and health professionals and has a growing reputation of presenting to the health care industry.


Dr. Fred S. Ferguson is also Distinguished Teaching Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry and Associate Professor of Pediatric Medicine University Hospital, Stony Brook University. At Stony Brook, he is Director of the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Care for the Developmentally Disabled Program, Pediatric Dental Infectious Disease Program, and the Craniofacial Cleft Palate Center.


He received his DDS from Howard University (1973), and completed residency training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Connecticut (1975). He is a diplomat and fellow of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Ferguson has a long history in community service. His professional experience includes research in oral health and pediatric dental curriculum development. He maintains membership in national dental organizations and has an extensive history of presentations to health professionals and consumers. His publications include book chapters, original journal articles and abstracts and he has maintained an active private practice in pediatric dentistry since 1975.

Dr. Steven P. Engebretson, DMD, MS, MS

Dr. Engebretson is Assistant Professor of Periodontics and Implantology, Department of Periodontics and Implantology Stony Brook University. Dr Engebretson is the recipient of NIH grants and has a growing national expertise as an investigator of the relationship of diabetes and periodontal illness. He received his B.A. Biology New York University (1992) and graduated Doctor of Dental Medicine cum lauda et thesis propria Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1995). He completed his Fellowship/Advanced Training as a Visiting Scientist at the Bronx VA Medical Center (1994), holds a Master of Science in Periodontics, College of Dental Medicine Columbia University (1998) and Masters of Science in Biostatistics, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University (2005). Dr Engebretson has Board Certification and is Diplomate American Board of Periodontology. He holds membership in the American Dental Association, Dental Society of the State of New York, New York County Dental Society, American Academy of Osseointegration, American Academy of Periodontology, Northeast Society of Periodontists.

Dr. Denise Trochesset DDS

Dr. Denise Trochesset is Assistant Professor of Oral Biology and Pathology at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, where she is also Director of Oral Pathology. Dr. Trochesset is jointly appointed in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Trochesset is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. She completed a General Practice Residency at the West Haven Veterans Administration Medical Center in Connecticut and then devoted ten years to private practice. Subsequently, she pursued a career in oral pathology, completing a three year residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at New York Hospital- Queens. Dr. Trochesset attained her Fellowship to the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and her specialty boards in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in 2002.

 

Dr. Trochesset is currently a full-time faculty member at Stony Brook teaching Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine to the undergraduate dental students and the post graduate students of various residency programs. She has an active faculty practice in clinical Oral Pathology/Oral Medicine and she is Director of Stony Brook Oral Pathology, a biopsy service. (stonybrookoralpath.com)

Dr. Mary Truhlar DDS, MS

Dr. Mary Truhlar is Chair and Associate Professor Department of General Dentistry, a graduate of the School of Dental Medicine Stony Brook University (1984), and a nationally recognized specialist in geriatric oral health and care with an emphasis in managing the chronic ill and infirmed senior population. She completed a 2 year General Practice Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (1986) and received her master’s degree in Geriatric Dentistry at the Fellowship/Advanced Training program, Milwaukee VAMC and Marquette University in 1988. Dr. Truhlar serves on several national organizations specific to geriatric health, is a reviewer for national journals for dental health care and for the GEC Grants, HRSA, Bureau of Health Professions, Washington, D.C. Dr. Truhlar is a long standing member of the Long Island Geriatric Education Center (LIGEC) and national health committees. Her research focus has been to investigate epidemiological trends in utilization of dental services by medically compromised and physically disabled older adults.

Dr Ronald Wender

Ron Wender, DDS is an Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and the Director of the Practice Management Program. He is the Director of Continuing Dental Education for the School of Dental Medicine and serves as faculty for the Dental Auxiliary Program. Beginning in 1975, He was appointed to the Department of Oral Surgery at the School of Dental Medicine and taught Basic Life Support to dental students.


Dr Wender is a graduate of West Virginia University School of Dentistry and completed a one year Graduate Practice Residency at Florida State Hospital. In addition to his University responsibilities he has maintained a private general practice in Stony Brook since 1970 where he still practices. Dr Wender has an extensive community service experience as President of the Northern Brookhaven Study Group and as a volunteer firefighter for 14 years for the town of Stony Brook and served as the Commissioner for the Setauket Fire District. He continues to train and certify both lay and professionals in medical emergencies and basic life support.
